Who are you? And, what do you want to be know for?

People size you up in seconds, but what exactly are they evaluating? According to Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy Holding, in her book, “Presence,” they’re quickly answering two questions when they first meet you:

  • Can I trust this person?
  • Can I respect this person?

Not surprising, most business people, believe competence is the more important factor. After all, they’re intent on proving that they are the more talented and smarter choice to handle your business. But in fact, here’s the surprise, Cuddy says warmth and trustworthiness, are the more important factors in how people evaluate you.

And while competence is highly valued, Cuddy says that it’s evaluated only after trust is established. And focusing too much on displaying your strengths can backfire.

The take away? If someone you’re trying to influence doesn’t trust you, you’re not going to get very far; in fact, you might even create some suspicion because you may come across as manipulative. A warm, trustworthy person who is also strong evokes admiration. But only after you’ve established trust can your strengths be considered and valued.
